Making Cookies

We made eggless sugar cookies today for our measurement activity.  The kids help measure, mix, and shape the cookies.  We had two trays that didn't work out for some reason.  The kids all got to have some and seemed to enjoy it.  I am not sure I would make them again...maybe using a mixer would have helped.

Measuring Volume

Our science activity today was to measure volume.  The kids worked with a partner pouring cups of water into different objects to see how many cups it held.  We used a tablespoon for one small object.  It was interesting to see all the different results.  We discussed why the results were so different.  This was practice for tomorrow's cookie making.  Should be interesting...

Amazing Adjectives

We are learning about adjectives and how to add them to our writing to make it more interesting.  Today we read a book that had tons of adjectives in it.  I put it on the smart board and we went through it and circled all of the adjectives in the book.

Our Communities are Finished!

Look at the great work your children did on their communities!  They are outside of our class if you would like to come take a better look.

Sizing up our Stuffed Animals

We did some more measuring today of our stuffed animals.  We used rulers, measuring tape and balance scales and we measured in inches and centimeters.  It was an extremely busy day.

Gummy Bear Lab Results

Oh my goodness!  Our bears grew and got really soft like jello.  We remeasured and weighed and then answered questions about the new measurements.  The kids loved it!  Ask your child why the bears grew.

Gummy Bear Lab

Today in class for science we did a gummy bear experiment.  We measured the length, width, thickness and weight of a gummy bear.  Then we each got to put a gummy in our own cup of water.  We got to predict what will happen to the gummy bear after sitting in water overnight.
Then we also got to measure gummy bears using a graph.  We each got our own packs of gummy bears and we sorted them and graphed them by color.  Finally, we got to EAT THEM!

Making Communities

In Social Studies, we are working on another group project.  We have six groups of three working together to make either a rural, urban or suburban community.  It has been great to see them cooperate with each other to plan out their murals.  I can't wait to see the finished products.

Buddy Reading

We were practicing buddy reading yesterday in class for the first time.  They did very well.  We first talked about how to be a good buddy and to be respectful and a good listener.  I tried to match them up with someone close to the same reading level with similar interests.  They of course, wanted to do it again today.

Urban, Rural, and Suburban Communities

In Social Studies, we read Town Mouse, Country Mouse and talked about the things the mice liked about where they lived, and how they felt about the place they visited.  Then we talked about places you work, play and live in the different communities.  Then we each illustrated places to work, live and play in each community.

Word Work

We practiced our spelling words today with some word work stations.  We had 4 stations: scrabble spelling where they use scrabble tiles to spell the word and then add up the value, rainbow roll and write where they roll and dice to see which color they write the word in, vowel sort, and fridge magnets on the smart board.
Practice those words at home so they will do well on the test on Friday!

2nd Grade Scientists

Today we practiced making observations using different objects and magnifying glasses.  We looked at our object using our five senses with our group and then recorded our observations.
